Thirty computers have been donated to the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) of Cameroon Working in the Domain of Human Settlements [Coalition des Organisations Non Gouvernementales (ONG) et des Organisations de Base (OCB) du Cameroun Oeuvrant dans le Domaine des Etablissements Humains – CONGEH].

CONGEH, a non-profit organisation with twenty-five active member groups, was created in 1995 to:
  • encourage co-operation between organisations working in the field of human settlement in Cameroon;
  • co-ordinate and harmonise the actions of member organisations;
  • promote exchanges and dissemination of information;
  • mobilise useful resources for the development of members’ activities;
  • sensitise national and international opinion to the problems of well-being faced by the population;
  • co-ordinate the Women and Habitat Network (le Réseau Femme et Habitat) in the Francophone Africa sub-region, and diffuse information to members. This network strives:
  • to promote women’s access to land and housing;
  • to mobilise women for campaigns on access to land and housing;
  • to identify and exchange sub-regional experiences in these fields; and
  • to plan strategies and initiatives in the field of the above and in development.

CONGEH has an English language website at www.congeh.kabissa.org/menueng.html

Our computers are intended to be placed with two GICs (Groupes d'Initiative Commune – Communal Initiative Groups):
  • twenty with the GIC de Promotion de Loisirs pour Enfants au Cameroun  (GIC-PLEC, GIC for the Promotion of Leisure for Children in Cameroon)
  • ten with the Mutuelle pour la Propriété Foncière (MUPROF-GIC, Mutual Society for Land and Buildings).

GIC-PLEC is based in Bana in the West Province of Cameroon. The group promotes healthy leisure activities for young people and intercultural exchanges. To this end they wish to construct an Internet facility to enable their young people to have a wider window on the world. MUPROF-GIC, based in Yaoundé, builds low-income and social housing for the urban disadvantaged. They also wish to have Internet access for their members.

This shipment largely consists of computers donated by local schools.

2001-2003

Computers donated by North Staffs businesses and refurbished by our partner organisation TECC (The Ethical Computer Centre project) were sent to Eséka in the (francophone) humid forest zone of Cameroon, West Central Africa, in 2001 and 2003. The first shipment comprised some fifty machines and the second some one hundred and fifty.

Among the projects supported by these machines is Bil & Friends Center, a facility custom built as a classroom for Adult Education classes and after-school Computer Clubs.
